It all starts after the music. The easy part, the thought, the emotion, the feeling that comes with the song. That’s the bit they show you in the montage. But the hard work. The day to day to day to day grind. That’s forever and there’s no song there. There’s a breeze or a laugh that gives you a moment to pause but the truth is that if you’re doing it right, you’re going to be too busy to appreciate it; most of the time.

How come women are always so focused on the pain they go through when they give birth, but no one seems to give a damn about the pain the baby goes through. As everyone who’s ever put on a helmet that’s too small or put their head through railings that are kind of a tight fit will know coming outta that things going to hurt like a mofo. To get an accurate similuation of this, find someone with a pretty narrow head and wait until they fall asleep/unconscious. Grab a kryptonite bike lock and secure it round their neck while they’re out. Now wake them violently by trying to pull it off . See what happens.

I’ve been working on a webpage learning PHP. Whilst working on the comments panel I found that the updates I was making weren’t being reflected immediately after the form was submitted, rather they were only shown on the second refresh. This was simply due to the order of SQL queries in my PHP file. I was querying first to display the records, then querying to insert the new records. Stupid, but could be frustrating, and completly obvious

This is just a place where I’m going to putting my thoughts. I’ve always had a lot of respect for people that have a routine of self improvement. I remember watching a Bruce Lee documentary where it showed his dedication to his craft. He’d train for four hours every morning on his balcony with a wooden dummy. It might not have been four hours, it doesn’t really matter, it’s the idea that it’s him and martial arts. For Bruce Lee, martial arts were more than just something he did, they were a mentor. It seems strange to think of it that way, but the more time I spend mulling it over, the more solid it seems.

There is a feedback that you get from something that you struggle with that seems almost like an argument. Argument isn’t right, it’s more like the kind of back and forth an angsty teenager will have with an elder more patient uncle. Because ultimately if you walk away from it, the struggle won’t care, but if you fight with it, if you pour yourself into it, then it will give back just as much.

Perhaps that’s why people can prioritise it so. Because even if you’re doing something in a group, like running, but you’re dedicated to it (and the struggle) , then you’ve got a one on one conversation going. Want a clear example? Listen to runners tell stories of their best run. None of them will talk about the easiest one, where they beat the competition without breaking a sweat. But that’s not the kicker, there’s something desperate as they try to explain, to get the listener to understand, to re-capture that secret conversation. But you can’t. Because it’s not a conversation of words. It’s emotional, it’s physical and there’s more than something of the soul in it. You’re not diluted by any pretention or lack of understanding. It’s you vs the better you, and you both understand each other exactly. Only vs isn’t the right word. It’s You opposing you.

And who wins? Well, I know who loses. If you walk away from the fight, you’ve lost. And you’ll win each time you see the struggle through, be it running, climbing, or getting out of bed to get to those French lessons. But the only way to really win is to keep struggling every day. That’s the only way you’ll really get the feedback from that other You.
